This vintage avalanche probe consists of 4 sections, each approximately 43” (109 cm), which screw together to form a probe about 14’ (≈4.3 m) long. A shorter version with two sections forms a probe of 85” (≈2.15 m).
Likely made of aluminum, the probe weighs approximately 2 lbs 3 oz (≈1 kg).
Used in the 1930s–’40s by the Swiss Army to locate objects buried deep in the snow, this probe can also be used as a marker to maintain orientation in a specific area. It is not just for snow – it can also be used to measure water depth under a boat or even to retrieve objects from the bottom of a pool.
