The Austrian Armed Forces (Bundesheer) have 21 military ranks, from Recruit to General. Except the rank “Recruit,” all ranks share the six-pointed star, a symbol inspired by the alpine edelweiss, the traditional emblem of the Austrian military.

Gefreiter

In the mercenary armies (Landsknechts) of the 16th century, particularly reliable and experienced soldiers were called “gefreyte Knechte”. They performed guard duty and were deployed in combat at especially critical points, while being exempt from certain other duties.

In the 18th century, Gefreiters formed the first rank of a company; each Gefreiter was the leader of a “rotte”, meaning one or two soldiers who stood directly behind him in formation.

In the Prussian army, the rank was introduced in 1807 also for the cavalry and remained, with the exception of the rank of Obergefreiter in the field artillery (from 1859), until 1918 the only enlisted rank in the Prussian/German army.

The distinguishing insignia of Gefreiters was a reduced version of the sergeant’s button; the Obergefreiter wore the sergeant’s button and the non-commissioned officer’s lanyard (in the colours of the respective state) on the sidearm (cavalry sabre, bayonet). This led in soldiers’ slang to the term “button soldier”.

In the various units of the then army of the k.u.k. monarchy, other designations for the rank of Gefreiter also existed (e.g. in the infantry – Patrouilleführer, in the artillery - Vormeister).
