The Austrian Armed Forces (Bundesheer) have 21 military ranks, from Recruit to General. Except the rank “Recruit,” all ranks share the six-pointed star, a symbol inspired by the alpine edelweiss, the traditional emblem of the Austrian military.

In the k.u.k. army, he was still classified among the non-commissioned officers (and accordingly wore the yellow-black NCO portepee). Today, the Austrian military rank roughly corresponds to the ranks of Hauptgefreiter or Stabsgefreiter in the German Bundeswehr.

The Korporal performs, in peacetime, command functions at the level of a combat squad or possibly a platoon. In overseas missions, he is referred to in English as Corporal (Cpl).

Zugsführer

In the Austro-Hungarian Army, the rank introduced in 1857 (also called Führer, Stabsführer) corresponded to the German NCO rank of Sergeant (and wore the yellow-black NCO portepee).                  This rank evolved from the Zugskorporal.

The Zugsführer of the Austro-Hungarian Army was in many cases also the commander of a platoon.
