About the DSF Organization

The Society for German-Soviet Friendship (DSF) was one of the most influential civic organizations in the GDR. Its purpose was to strengthen the political, cultural, and economic ties between the German Democratic Republic and the Soviet Union.

The organization was originally founded as the Society for the Study of Soviet Culture, with the aim of promoting the Russian language and Soviet culture. It was later renamed DSF and became an important instrument for fostering cooperation between the two socialist states.

During the final years of the GDR, the organization experienced significant membership growth due to the popularity of glasnost and perestroika, the reform policies introduced by Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. By 1989, the DSF had approximately 6.3 million members.

Historical Background

During the Cold War, the German Democratic Republic and the Soviet Union maintained close political, economic, and cultural cooperation. The DSF played an important role in promoting these relations by organizing cultural events, educational exchanges, and activities dedicated to strengthening cooperation between the two countries.

The Honor Badge for German-Soviet Friendship was one of the organization's highest distinctions and symbolized the recipient's contribution to strengthening relations between the GDR and the USSR.
