Historical context: The German Democratic Republic (GDR / DDR) existed from 1949 to 1990 and was one of the principal states of the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War (1947-1991). The Cold War was a period of political, military, and ideological rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union, without direct military conflict between the two superpowers. During this period, the GDR established its defense and public security institutions, including the German People's Police (Deutsche Volkspolizei - DVP), whose badges and decorations are today valued as authentic historical artifacts reflecting the history of the 20th century and the organization of the East German state.
